USDA ranks foods according to their antioxidant content

Physician Practice Advisor, June 22, 2004

An apple a day really may keep the doctor away.

The USDA has recently completed a comprehensive study of the antioxidant levels in commonly consumed foods. The Red Delicious apple ranked 12th on the list with the Granny Smith apple right behind it in 13th place. The Gala apple just made the list at number 20. A variety of red beans and blueberries claimed the top five spots. Other antioxidant-rich foods include:

  • artichokes
  • prunes
  • plums
  • russet potatoes
  • sweet cherries
  • black beans
  • pecans
  • blackberries
  • cranberries
  • raspberries
  • strawberries

If your patients wrinkle their noses when you sing the praises of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, remind them that scientists believe antioxidants fight cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer's. "The bottom line is the same," said lead author Ronald L. Prior, Ph.D. in a press release. "Eat more fruits and veggies."
