Hospital security shoots and misses driver, wounds passenger
Healthcare Security Weekly, June 22, 2004
In an attempt to stop an patient fleeing in a car, a hospital security officer at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit fired several shots at the driver, but seriously wounded the passenger last week, according to the Associated Press.
The 21-year-old patient arrived at the hospital at 6 a.m. on June 13 after being bitten in a fight. Another man involved in the same fight was also being treated for a bite. Police said the men began fighting again in the emergency department, when hospital security officers broke up the fight. Then, security kicked out the 21-year-old patient.
The 21-year-old then got in a car, drove through a parking barrier, and headed toward a security officer, police say. Another security officer shot at the car, but ended up hitting the 20-year-old passenger. The passenger was listed in serious condition with gunshot wounds to his head and arm, police said. The driver got away.< P>
