Better prepare for union strikes
Healthcare Security Weekly, June 22, 2004
While union strikes can sometimes come out of the blue, hospital security can prepare ahead of time.
One way to increase security's preparedness is to try to maintain good relations with hospital unions. Hospitals need to establish access policies and rules, not just for the building and property, but with unions about where people can and can't be, says Scott Martin, director of security and parking services and emergency-management coordinator at UCI Medical Center in Orange, CA.
Ideally, your human resources department should have good relationships with the unions. However, sometimes the security department must arrange to meet with union representatives. Don't wait until a potential strike or negotiations to form these relationships, Martin says.
