Prisoner flees MO hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, June 22, 2004
While receiving treatment at a Missouri hospital, a prisoner escaped a hospital security officer's watch on June 7, according to the Kansas City Star.
A day after James George Cates, 20, fled Liberty Hospital in Kansas City, sheriff's deputies found him at a nearby residence. He now faces charges of escaping from custody and first-degree tampering.
Cates, who originally was in custody for a parole violation, went to the hospital after he said he became ill. The deputy assigned to watch Cates shackled him to a bed. However, the deputy asked a hospital security officer to watch Cates while he ran errands. The deputy said he checked to make sure the shackles were secure.
Cates struggled with the guard and escaped by stealing a construction pickup truck parked nearby, the Star reported.
