Maryland governor pushes for medical malpractice reform
LTC Liability Monitor, June 16, 2004
With malpractice insurance rates slated to soar over the summer, Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., called for a General Assembly special session to find a solution, The Maryland Gazette reported.
"A continuing medical malpractice crisis is in effect a continuing health crisis," the governor told the Gazette. His office is developing legislation similar to a New Jersey law that protects physicians, hospitals, and nursing homes from lawsuits when they report medical errors.
One of Maryland's largest insurers is considering a premium increase of 40% to 50% this summer-perhaps enough to push legislators toward malpractice reform as healthcare professionals threaten to leave the state, Erhlich told the Gazette last week.
