Nursing home fined $10,000 for poor security

LTC Liability Monitor, June 10, 2004

The Illinois Department of Public Health last week fined one nursing home $10,000 for failing to provide sufficient security after a resident in January wandered away from the facility and died of cold air exposure, according to the Chicago Tribune.

State officials alleged a staff member at ManorCare at Oak Lawn waited too long to notify a supervisor that the resident was missing, and the facility did not notify police for nearly two hours. Although the resident-who had a history of wandering-wore an electronic monitoring device, staff said they did not remember hearing an alarm.

The facility requested a hearing to contest the fine, and has taken steps to improve security, the Tribune reported.
