Seniors confused by Medicare drug discount cards

Physician Practice Advisor, June 8, 2004

Seniors did not welcome the June 1 release of the Medicare drug discount cards, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation report released on June 3-just the opposite in fact.

According to results from focus groups held in Pittsburg, Kansas City, and Washington D.C., seniors were "confused and generally negative" about the card program. On a scale of one to 100 with one being negative and 100 being positive, seniors rated their feelings about the program at 31, the report says.

Seniors were unclear about the prices the card offers and didn't understand the law's additional preventive benefits. Many of the seniors felt that the discount and the $600 annual subsidies were not enough, and they were overwhelmed by having to choose among the 73 cards available to them.
