Family of HIV-infected resident sues over discrimination
LTC Liability Monitor, June 2, 2004
The family of a stroke victim filed a lawsuit against a Louisiana nursing home that allegedly rejected the resident's admission upon learning he was HIV positive, reported the Associated Press (AP).
This suit-the first of five against other facilities that allegedly accepted and later rejected the resident-is intended to force nursing homes to adopt nondiscrimination policies, the resident's attorney told AP.
In 2003, family members filed a discrimination complaint against the six nursing homes. The resident currently lives at one facility that later re-accepted him.
