Detroit hospital security guard shoots coworker

Healthcare Security Weekly, June 1, 2004

A St. John's Riverview Hospital security guard was arrested and charged with killing a fellow security guard while on duty and then fleeing the scene on Saturday, May 22, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Police found the security guard four days later in Georgia with a handgun in the trunk of his Crown Victoria.

Roosevelt McCormick, 50, of Eastpointe, MI, faces charges of first degree murder and felony firearms possession. McCormick, an armed security officer, allegedly shot to death coworker Avis Kincade, 43. Both worked as security guards at the hospital.

Police called the shooting an isolated incident. No other injuries were reported. It is unknown why McCormick shot Kincade, although some reports say an argument broke out between the two security guards that afternoon.

Kincade worked at St. John's for more than 10 years and was reportedly well-liked by her co-workers.

Police officials in Vienna, GA, received a call in the morning on Wednesday, May 26, from a man saying he was McCormick's brother-in-law and that McCormick was at his home. Police later arrested McCormick, who is being held in Georgia at the Dooly County Jail. Officials are still determining when he will be extradited to Michigan.

If convicted, McCormick could be sentenced to life in prison.
