Pennsylvania debates mandatory overtime ban
LTC Liability Monitor, May 26, 2004
Healthcare unions spoke out to Pennsylvania's Senate Judiciary Committee this week in favor of a ban on mandatory overtime, reported the Associated Press (AP).
The bill-which limits caregiver schedules to 80 hours per two week period, except in emergencies-could cost healthcare facilities $100 to $500 in fines for each violation. Union representatives say the bill, sponsored by Sen. Christine Tartaglione (D-Philadelphia), will help alleviate the state's nursing shortage, reduce turnover, and ultimately help providers' financial situations.
Several other states have enacted overtime bans, including California, New Jersey, Maine, and Maryland, according to AP.
