Louisiana cracks down on nursing home abuse
LTC Liability Monitor, May 19, 2004
Stepping up its efforts to curb abuse against nursing home residents, the office of Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti this month arrested several employees at adult day care centers and nursing facilities in the New Orleans area, reported New Orleans CityBusiness.
After investigating a resident death resulting from a dislodged tracheotomy tube, the office indicted one nurse on charges of negligent homicide and obstruction of justice, and charged a nursing assistant as an accessory to those crimes.
Two adult day care workers and two nursing home employees were charged with cruelty to the infirm, battery, and lying about previous criminal convictions. Another nursing home worker at a different facility also faced charges of lying about felony convictions.
Foti pledged continued vigilance in the investigation and prosecution of nursing home abuse cases, CityBusiness reported.
