Undercover investigations in NM reveal care problems

LTC Liability Monitor, May 13, 2004

Three New Mexico nursing homes received unexpected public scrutiny after undercover evaluators brought allegations of poor care, according to the Albuquerque [NM] Journal.

Health officials announced in a news conference last week that undercover investigations found many problematic and unacceptable conditions including improper sanitation practices, failure to monitor nutrition and hydration, inappropriate staff behavior while on the job, and a lack of supervision leading to resident elopement.

The state's Aging and Long-Term Services department recommended one facility be placed in receivership, allowing the state to take over operations.

The facilities denied knowledge of the evaluations prior to the news conference and requested an opportunity to review the findings, according to the Journal.
