LTC must increase staff vaccination rates, says APIC
LTC Liability Monitor, May 13, 2004
Only about 36% of healthcare workers with direct patient contact are immunized annually-a statistic that must change, according to a position paper released by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).
The statement pointed to research suggesting healthcare workers can be a source of institutional outbreaks. Long-term care and other healthcare settings should prepare a written policy to encourage influenza vaccinations for their workers, increase access to immunization, and help reduce the cost, APIC recommended.
Additionally, organizations should monitor annual immunization rates and track healthcare-associated influenza-and share this information with workers. Click here to read the position paper.
