Norwalk virus strikes nursing homes again
LTC Liability Monitor, May 5, 2004
Despite the recent long-term care industry's focus on infection control, the Norwalk virus resurfaced again in nursing homes this week.
Striking cruise ships and nursing homes in fall 2002 through winter 2003, the stomach virus reared its head at a Casper, WY nursing home, reported the Associated Press (AP). Twelve staff members and 50 of 172 residents were sickened by the virus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea for up to 48 hours.
Health officials are investigating the outbreak, and believe food preparation procedures are not to blame for the spread of the virus. Facility staff were retrained on proper handwashing and sanitation practices, and all social events were postponed until the outbreak subsides, according to AP.
