Resident struck by nursing home bus
LTC Liability Monitor, April 28, 2004
A resident of Arkansas Health Center in Benton, AR, was killed when the facility's bus backed over her, reported the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
The state-run nursing home for the mentally ill is installing a temporary driveway to prevent drivers from backing out when they pick up or drop off residents, and has other security improvements in the works, including door alarms.
The resident's husband told the Democrat-Gazette he believes she wasn't properly supervised, and suspected she fell behind the bus and could not get up. The state Department of Human Services-which runs the facility-discussed the theory of suicide with officials who will be investigating the incident.
