CIGNA settlement moves forward
Physician Practice Advisor, April 27, 2004
The CIGNA HealthCare settlement received a green light on April 21 when the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta dismissed appeals from five doctors who were unhappy with the terms of the agreement.
In 2000, 700,000 physicians filed a class-action lawsuit against eight of the largest for-profit managed-care plans in the country, including CIGNA. According to a February 2004 report in "Private Practice Success," the original lawsuit intended to help physicians recoup money insurance companies wrongly denied them and improve the insurance system, according to attorney Archie Lamb.
On December 18, 2003, the judge presiding over all the managed care litigation gave preliminary approval to a settlement with CIGNA that includes both monetary and other compensation for physicians. Any physician that provided service to a member of CIGNA HealthCare from August 1990 to the present can benefit.
