Prisoner patient fires three shots in hospital

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 25, 2004

A prisoner patient at Frankford Hospital in Philadelphia swiped a gun from a corrections officer and fired it three times last week, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. No one was injured.

Eric Holley, 45, faces charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, and robbery. It is unclear what treatment Holley sought at the hospital.

When Holley asked to go to the bathroom, the corrections officer unshackled him. Then, he assaulted the officer and grabbed the gun. After firing three shots, a hospital orderly wrestled him to the ground, police say.

"We apologize to hospital staff and the public for this, and we are taking a number of steps to assure Frankford Hospital and the public that we can maintain the safety and security of open wards in community settings," says prison commissioner Leon A. King.

King took responsibility for the mishap and says prison procedures are under investigation.
