China reports suspected SARS case in Beijing
Infection Control Monitor, April 22, 2004
China acknowledged on April 22 the first suspected SARS case in Beijing since last year's deadly outbreak, Reuters reports.
A 20-year-old nurse is being treated for symptoms of the illness, with more than 170 others under observation. Five people who had close contact with the nurse have developed symptoms, including a fever, and have been isolated.
The woman, a nurse at Jiangong Hospital in Beijing, fell ill with symptoms of SARS on April 5 and was moved to People's Hospital on April 14. She was being held in isolation and treated at Ditan Hospital in Beijing.
Two relatives who had brought the nurse to the hospital had reported fevers on April 19, prompting the hospital to increase surveillance for the disease.
China confirmed four cases of SARS in Guangdong earlier this year, the first since a global outbreak was declared over in July. All four recovered.
