CDC helps LTC fight off drug-resistant bacteria
LTC Liability Monitor, April 22, 2004
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched a campaign to halt the growing number of drug-resistant pathogens-primarily bacteria-and is focusing part of its effort on long-term care facilities, according to the CDC Web site.
The CDC's primary aims are to prevent infections, quickly diagnose and treat infections that do occur, get providers to use antibiotics wisely, and prevent transmission of infections. The CDC will develop and distribute informational material for clinicians, and help publish papers on how to prevent bacterial resistance among specific patient groups.
The agency outlines 12 steps to prevent resistance in long-term care settings on its Web site, including promoting flu and pneumonia vaccinations for residents and staff and developing a system to monitor antibiotics use. Click here to download the 12-step guide.
