Physician Practice Advisor, April 13, 2004
In 2003, state medical boards took 5,230 disciplinary actions, according to The Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States, Inc., 2004 Annual Report. This is a 7.28% increase from 2002 totals.
The 2003 numbers include 4,590 prejudicial actions, such as revoking or suspending physicians' licenses or issuing reprimands, and 640 non-prejudicial or administrative actions, such as license denials or reinstatement after disciplinary actions.
"The nation's state medical boards take their mission of public protection very seriously," said the Federation's Chief Executive Officer, James N. Thompson, M.D. in a press release. "This report helps each board look at the trends in its own actions over time."
