Man who dragged security guards charged with attempted murder
Healthcare Security Weekly, April 4, 2004
An Illinois man was charged with attempted murder last week after allegedly dragging two hospital security officers with his truck in Gateway Regional Medical Center parking lot in Granite City, the Associated Press reports.
Brian M. Casey, 31, of Pontoon Beach, IL, is in custody on charges of attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery.
Casey drove his girlfriend to the hospital for injuries that hospital staff suspected were domestic abuse. The staff contacted the local police and two hospital security guards attempted to detain Casey.
Casey got into his truck, put it into reverse, and hit the accelerator, Granite City Police Chief Dave Ruebhausen says. "He knocked one of the two guards to the ground and ran over one of his legs. The other officer was struck by the door," Ruebhausen says. "They were dragged 85 feet."
The security officers received treatment for some minor injuries.
The attempted murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
