Accused thief escapes hospital, dodges police
Healthcare Security Weekly, March 28, 2004
A man who allegedly tried to steal artwork from a gallery last week escaped a Montana hospital before police had an opportunity to arrest him, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports.
Hospital paramedics took Erik Scott Baldwin, 36, to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital for treatment of minor injuries after he got in a fight with the gallery owner.
While Baldwin received treatment, police officers were on their way to arrest him on a felony theft warrant. Baldwin managed to flee the hospital wearing nothing but hospital garb before police arrived.
A chase ensued between Baldwin and the police who found him hiding in an apartment building.
Officers later arrested Baldwin on charges of felony theft, criminal mischief, and possessing drug paraphernalia. He is being held in jail on a $200,000 bond.
