OH drafts liability lifeline for physicians
LTC Liability Monitor, March 18, 2004
If the physicians in your nursing home are concerned about medical liability insurance, chances are they're not alone.
In a recent survey by the American Medical Directors Association, 22% of physicians who work in nursing homes said they are having problems obtaining such insurance, reported the Akron [OH] Beacon Journal.
To relieve physicians of having to make the choice between carrying malpractice insurance and giving up nursing home patients, a commission sponsored by the Ohio Department of Insurance offered the following recommendations:
- A department review of the reasons for rate increases before they become effective
- A medical review panel to assess the merits of claims before they go to court
- A state-sponsored insurer to underwrite coverage for physicians with no other choice
