New Mexico passes "granny cam" bill

LTC Liability Monitor, March 11, 2004

Nursing home staff in New Mexico will soon be smiling for the cameras, following last week's signing of the Patient Care Monitoring Act, known as the "granny cam" bill, reported the Associated Press (AP).

Effective May 19, the bill-signed into law by Governor Bill Richardson-allows nursing home residents or their families to install video cameras or audio recorders at their own expense.

Additionally, the bill permits employee whistleblowers who report Medicaid false claims to file civil lawsuits for Medicaid fraud on behalf of the state-and take home 30% of the damages or settlement, according to the AP.
