Consider security officer certification
Healthcare Security Weekly, March 8, 2004
If you're trying to determine whether your security officers should seek certification, here are some items to consider:
- Are there any state requirements that security officers must meet for training?
- Are there licensing requirements for security officers?
- Do the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the Occupational Safety Health Administration have any security requirements?
Determine the requirements you must meet, but don't stop there. Many different levels of training are available, from free classes by local law agencies to certified training programs to college courses.
"The more you know, the safer your hospital is going to be," says Robert O'Brien, chief of security operations at Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon, GA.
For more information on security training and certification, read the March issue of the Healthcare Security and Emergency Management newsletter.
