Dengue fever outbreak in Indonesia kills 372

Infection Control Monitor, March 4, 2004

A dengue fever outbreak has killed 372 people across Indonesia so far this year, causing overcrowding in the hospitals of capital city Jakarta, Agence France Presse reports.

The Indonesia health ministry said there have been 24,254 infections since January 1. Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease that causes illnesses ranging from a nonspecific viral syndrome to severe and fatal hemorrhagic disease.

Jakarta's health office said hospitals admitted 827 new dengue patients March 3 and were treating more than 3,500. A total of 173 beds were still available at 25 hospitals in the city.

Health officials expect the outbreak to peak this month or in April.
