More healthcare workers should receive flu vaccine, says NFID
LTC Liability Monitor, March 4, 2004
The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) says only 36% of healthcare workers get flu vaccinations, even though vaccinations provide significant protection to the vulnerable people for whom they care.
The NFID cited a flu outbreak in New York in 1991-1992 in which two residents of a long-term care facility died after getting the flu. Only 10% of the facility's workers had been vaccinated.
NFID, a private non-profit organization based in Bethesda, MD, recommended health care administrators emphasize the importance of flu vaccines to workers and make free vaccinations conveniently available to workers. Click here to go to the NFID's Web site to read the report.
