Human bird flu vaccine near completion

Infection Control Monitor, February 26, 2004

Scientists are close to designing a human vaccine against the Asian bird flu, which has killed 22 people, ravaged the poultry industry, and stirred fears of a potential pandemic, Reuters reports.

The design phase should be completed in a few weeks, said Bjorn Melgaard, the World Health Organization representative in Thailand, at a meeting February 26 in Bangkok.

Once designed, the vaccine would be tested for safety and efficiency. It could be three to six months before a commercial version of the vaccine is available.
