Accused nurse’s former employers in compliance, says state

LTC Liability Monitor, February 26, 2004

A nursing home and several hospitals—former employers of a nurse accused of killing more than 40 patients—were let off the hook after officials did not find them at fault for failing to report patient deaths as suspicious, reported the Associated Press (AP).

The facilities had no evidence that the deaths occurring during Charles Cullen's employment there were suspicious and therefore could not be expected to report them, Pennsylvania health inspectors determined after a records review.

The review also showed that the hospitals performed a limited background check—in compliance with the state law—on the nurse before hiring him, according to the AP.
