Lawmakers address nursing home fire safety

LTC Liability Monitor, February 26, 2004

Following September's deadly nursing home fire that resulted in 14 resident deaths, Tennessee lawmakers developed a number of bills intended to prevent similar incidents, reported the [Nashville] Tennessean.

Each bill offered a different solution to the problem of safety in long-term care facilities—some limited sprinkler requirements to nursing homes, while others included assisted living and residential senior communities.

Subcommittees in both the House and Senate planned to hear testimony from lobbyists, advocacy groups, state representatives, victims' relatives, and representatives from fire protection and sprinkler companies before moving any of the bills forward.
