Pharmacy Regulation Resource, February 25, 2004
University of Missouri Health Care in Columbia, MO, uses the following checklist to train staff about Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) privacy. Consider these tips when checking your workplace for HIPAA compliance:
1. Conversations with the patient and family regarding confidential information are not held in public areas.
2. Phone conversations are conducted in areas where confidential patient information cannot be overheard.
3. Dictation is completed in areas where confidential patient information cannot be overheard.
4. Computer monitors are positioned away from public areas to avoid visitor observation.
5. Only authorized staff have access to confidential patient information, and they access and use only the minimum amount necessary to accomplish their duties. All staff wear the appropriate name tag at all times.
6. All supervisors regularly review with staff institutional policies that are applicable for their area work assignments to ensure that current practices and procedures protect patient privacy.
