Reforms sought after ALF resident's death

LTC Liability Monitor, February 18, 2004

The family of a man killed after wandering away from a Dania Beach, Florida assisted living facility (ALF) says it wants stronger protections for residents of Alzheimer units, the Sun-Sentinel of south Florida reported.

The daughters of Charles Klaer said family members want Florida to require periodic head counts of residents in Alzheimer's units, doors with alarms, and mandated reporting of missing residents. Klaer was struck and killed by a car in January after wandering away from Willow Manor Retirement Living and Memory Support Center.

The county sheriff continues to investigate whether criminal negligence on the part of the ALF was involved in Klaer's death, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
