Wrongful death settlement spells more trouble for Kindred

LTC Liability Monitor, February 18, 2004

Following last week's ruling that required Kindred Healthcare to pay $3.7 million to remedy poor care in four Kentucky nursing homes, the long-term care chain settled an unrelated wrongful death suit this week, reported the Los Angeles Times.

The $1 million civil suit alleged that a 75-year-old resident of Maywood Acres Healthcare Center in Oxnard, CA, died from a number of serious conditions-including pressure sores, significant weight loss, dehydration, unexplained bruises, and infections resulting from poor hygiene-acquired during her 79-day stay at the nursing home.

The facility was previously fined for a complaint related to the resident's care, and was also cited for understaffing in 2002, and reported staffing problems in 2003, according to the Times.
