Nursing homes focus on bathtub safety after resident death

LTC Liability Monitor, February 18, 2004

After a resident at Jubilee Lodge Nursing Home in Alberta, Canada, suffered fatal second-degree burns last month while being bathed, facilities across the region will undergo bathtub safety inspections, reported the [Ontario, Canada] Record.

Capital Health—the government-funded health authority that oversees Alberta facilities—has developed enhanced bathing procedures and stepped up its monitoring of long-term care facilities following a three-week investigation into the resident's death.

Elder advocacy groups in Canada are calling for strengthened regulations and steeper fines for poor nursing home care, reported the Record.
