Investigators probe an ALF resident's death
LTC Liability Monitor, February 5, 2004
After a resident suffering from Alzheimer's disease wandered out of an assisted living facility (ALF) and was struck and killed by a car, investigators are examining the case for potential criminal negligence.
The event allegedly occurred just days after the resident's wife agreed to pay extra to Willow Manor Retirement Living and Memory Support Center in Dania Beach, FL, to attach an electronic monitoring device to her husband's ankle, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
A private investigator allegedly found the device in the resident's bedside drawer after his death, seemingly undamaged and functioning correctly when tested, the [Fort Lauderdale] Sun-Sentinel reported. The investigator told the Sun-Sentinel he wanted to show a sherriff's office detective that the monitor worked and may have prevented the resident's death.
