Bush repeats call for medical malpractice reform
LTC Liability Monitor, January 29, 2004
Despite seeing his proposal blocked in the Senate last year, President Bush again called for medical malpractice reform while speaking at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, AR, according to Newsday.
Bush cited "too many frivolous and junk lawsuits" as a contributing factor to rising health care costs. Comparing the health care system to a giant lottery in which lawyers hold the winning ticket, Bush stressed the need for a $250,000 cap on non-economic damages, Newsday reported.
Arkansas physicians saw a 150% increase in liability premiums as a result of litigation, he said.
