NIOSH tests escape respirators
Healthcare Security Weekly, January 19, 2004
When purchasing escape respirators for your facility, look for products approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
NIOSH, which is run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recently began accepting applications to test and evaluate self-contained escape respirators for use against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear agents. Escape respirators, also called escape hoods, are designed to protect users from breathing harmful gases, vapors, fumes, and dust for the limited amount of time needed to reach fresh air.
In November, NIOSH began accepting applications to test and evaluate air-purifying respirators. The institute's certification program aims to help employers and users select respirators with greater confidence.
NIOSH posted the criteria at www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/esctestlttr.html.
