AARP announces campaign to reduce the cost of prescription drugs
Physician Practice Advisor, January 21, 2004
In a blitz that will reach from consumers to Congress, the AARP Chief Executive Officer Bill Novelli announced Friday a legislative agenda targeting affordable prescription drugs and increased consumer intelligence when it comes to drug spending.
The campaign calls for federal legislative initiatives to lower prescription drug prices, including legal importation of Canadian pharmaceuticals, and a system that gives the Secretary of Health & Human Services the authority to negotiate lower drug prices for Medicare beneficiaries.
The campaign will also work to reduce red tape for consumers, call on drug companies to limit price hikes to the rate of inflation, calls for increased support at the local level, and plans to continue consume education about generics and the financial benefits of comparison shopping.
