Ammonia leak forces hospital into lockdown
Healthcare Security Weekly, February 16, 2004
An ammonia leak in a pork production plant in Sioux Falls, SD, forced a nearby hospital into lockdown last week.
Avera McKennan Hospital called in additional staff and interpreters to handle the 38 patients, many of whom didn't speak English, according to ABC's Dakota First News.
As an extra precaution, the hospital shut down the ventilation system to keep fumes out, and increased security, Dakota First News reports.
Patients received treatment for irritation, mild chest discomfort, dizziness, anxiety, as well as eye and breathing problems, the Dakota First News reports.
