Johns Hopkins develops hand-off tips

Quality Improvement Monitor, October 24, 2008

Physicians at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore have published a list of good surgical sign-out practices to avoid troublesome patient hand-offs, The Wall Street Journal Health Blog reports.

The list, published in the October Archives of Surgery, includes the following tips:

  • Make sure there’s enough time for the physician’s sign-out process
  • Have a standard list that includes information such as patients’ surgery date/type, postoperative complications, pain management, and important medications
  • Have a plan to transfer patients to a higher level of care if necessary.
