Grant awarded to help fund EHRs for Oregon's migrant workers

EHR Connection, October 13, 2008

The Regence Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to the Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation to help fund EHRs for thousands of Oregon residents, the Beaverton Daily Times reported September 12.

The grant will help fund the purchase of software and hardware to support EMRs at Virginia Garcia clinics, according to the article. Virginia Garcia’s four primary care clinics are in Beaverton, Cornelius, Hillsboro, and McMinnville. Its mission is to provide comprehensive, high quality, culturally appropriate healthcare to the communities of Washington and Yamhill counties with special emphasis on seasonal and migrant farm workers.

“While the majority of Virginia Garcia patients are Latino, all patients with barriers to receiving healthcare are welcome here,” Diana Walker, the foundation’s executive director, told the newspaper. “With well documented ethnic, racial and socioeconomic disparities in health care delivery, EHRs are another step forward in helping us to reduce gaps in care for our patient populations.”

The EHRs will include information such as diagnoses, allergies, laboratory test results, and medications, according to the article. Providers will be able to enter and store orders for tests, prescriptions, and other services in a computer-based system that enhances legibility.
