HRET to study how CMS' new rule will affect safety net hospitals
Quality Improvement Monitor, October 10, 2008
The Commonwealth Fund has awarded an affiliate of the American Hospital Association (AHA) a $180,000 grant to study how CMS’ new no-payment rule will affect safety net hospitals.
The study the Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET) marks the first effort to determine the impact of a CMS value-based purchasing policy on hospitals that provide significant levels of care to primarily low-income, uninsured and vulnerable populations. CMS stopped paying for 10 hospital-acquired conditions October 1.
“Improving quality of care and preserving the health care safety net are key priorities of the AHA and HRET,” John R. Combes, MD, interim president of HRET, said in a press release. “We’re enthusiastic about this study and the potential of this project to yield groundbreaking findings that will help form future policy.”
