Survey finds senior leadership lacking on infection prevention

Quality Improvement Monitor, September 26, 2008

Only 15% of respondents said that senior leadership was actively engaged in reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in their hospitals, according to a new survey.

The survey, conducted by Premier Inc. and the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, queried more than 930 hospital staff members, including infection preventionists, risk managers, and quality staff members.

Some 55.5% said removing unnecessary indwelling urinary catheters, a practice that prevents urinary tract infections, as the most challenging HAI prevention intervention to implement. Measuring compliance with hand hygiene practices recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was also identified by 35.5%.
