When there's a fire, RACE

Lab Safety Advisor, September 23, 2008

Acronyms are a great way to help employees remember things. RACE stands for:

  • Remove all persons from the immediate area
  • Activate the nearest fire alarm
  • Contain the fire by closing the fire doors
  • Evacuate the area

Some facilities change the wording slightly. Regardless of the specific language, the meaning is the same—employees must act quickly, send out the alarm, and leave the area immediately.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that 93% of all fire-related deaths and 95% of all direct property damage occurs after the fire has progressed beyond the early stages. Make sure your employees are fully informed about the fire prevention equipment available, how to use it, and the location of the evacuation route and triage area for the workplace.
