Tip of the week: Control the movement of personnel during an emergency
Healthcare Security Weekly, September 22, 2008
Joint Commission emergency management standards require that hospitals control the movement of personnel within their facility during an emergency. This is to prevent theft, drug diversions, and kidnappings, says author Thomas J. Huser, MS, CHSP. Unfortunately there are those elements of society who will take advantage of the confusion of an emergency for their personal gain and so hospitals must plan for this type of activity in advance, Huser says.
One way to achieve this goal is to issue temporary ID badges color-coded to indicate where a person may go within the facility. If they are in an unauthorized location, staff would then question their presence.
