An update on federal travel restrictions

Infection Control Monitor, September 19, 2008

Since the government established a Do Not Board (DNB) list in June 2007, the CDC has placed 33 names on that list restricting those persons from boarding commercial aircraft departing from or arriving in the United States. All 33 had suspected or confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis, posing a risk for infection to the public traveling on commercial aircraft.

The CDC and U.S. Department of Homeland Security have managed the public health list, which enables public health officials to request restrictions on federal air travel for persons with communicable diseases who meet specific criteria and pose a serious threat to air travelers. In the September 19 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly, the CDC said from June 2007 to May 2008, it received requests to include 42 people on the list, and actually included 33 people. Of the nine people, four were the subject of other actions pursued by local health departments such as local isolation orders, three voluntarily agreed not to attempt to board a commercial aircraft, and two were determined to be noncontagious, the CDC reported.
