Hospitals urged to provide more private rooms
Quality Improvement Monitor, August 29, 2008
Hospitals should move toward single-patient rooms in all newly built hospitals, according to a paper in the August 27 Journal of the American Medical Association.
"[Previous studies] have shown that it does reduce infections, there is some evidence that it may reduce medication errors, the physician can talk to the patient in private, and the family can be there," Jane Bolin, an associate professor of health policy and management at Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health in College Station, told HealthDay News. "I think hospitals are going that way."
Single rooms could cut infections, reduce noise, make it easier for families to visit, and allow physicians to talk to their patients freely without worrying about compromising their privacy, the paper said.
