Massachusetts requires EHRs in hospitals, health centers by 2015
EHR Connection, September 1, 2008
Massachusetts will require hospitals and community health centers to use interoperable EHR systems if they seek to obtain or renew licenses to operate in 2015 and beyond, Federal Computer Week reported August 11.
The new law provides a mechanism for creating a statewide health information network, according to the article. However, it stops short of requiring physicians in private practice to use health information technology (IT). The law instead requires them to demonstrate competence in the use of e-prescribing, EHRs, computerized physician order entry, and other forms of health IT by the beginning of 2015 as part of their licensing requirements.
