Report finds N.H. hospitals not reporting infection rates

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has come under fire after reports surfaced that the state isn’t enforcing law requiring hospitals to publicly report hospital-acquired infections, according to the Union Leader.
Two state representatives want the head of Health and Human Services to go before an oversight committee to explain why hospitals aren’t complying with the law. A report in the New Hampshire Sunday News earlier this month found that hospitals aren’t reporting infection rates.
"If true, this is particularly disturbing because the legislation specifically and unequivocally states: 'Whether or not the department has established (an infection) reporting system, hospitals shall begin to submit reports as required by this section within six months of the effective date of this section,'" Hess wrote to the head of Health and Human Services, the Union Leader said. The first reports were to be filed no later than December 31, 2007.
