Bronx hospital security guard says EMTs beat him
Healthcare Security Weekly, August 25, 2008
A security guard at a Bronx, NY, hospital says two irate city emergency medical technicians (EMTs) beat him up.
The 28-year-old security officer, was working the nightshift at Lincoln Hospital on August 14 when two Fire Department of New York (FDNY) EMT’s brought a patient in on a stretcher, reported the New York Daily News. The officer and an EMT got into a shouting match over who was allowed in the emergency department, the newspaper said. The officer said the EMT cursed at him and shoved him and then a second EMT started hitting him. Another medic rushed over to break up the fight.
Fellow hospital security officers arrested both EMTs, but a hospital security boss voided the arrests and threatened to fire him if he filed a complaint against the two, the security guard told the newspaper.
A hospital spokesman told the newspaper the matter was a “misunderstanding” and the incident is under review. The officer filed a police report, with about 15 fellow security officers accompanying him to show their support, the newspaper said.
